Jim Joel is a Kampala-based artist, photographer and researcher whose practice explores cities, architecture, landscapes and the stories of place. His work is rooted in a curiosity about how people shape, inhabit and remember the environments around them.
Moving between cities and landscapes, he uses photography as a way of observing and documenting the built and natural world. His city-to-city work brings together architecture, streets, public spaces and everyday encounters, while his landscape photography extends these observations beyond the urban environment.
His editorial and research work has focused particularly on architectural heritage, resulting in books, essays, and collaborations that document buildings and urban histories across Uganda and beyond. Alongside photography, he has developed projects that bring together archival research, visual storytelling and public engagement.
Based in Kampala, Jim’s practice continues to evolve through travel, residencies, exhibitions and research—using each place as an opportunity to look more closely, walk further and understand the stories embedded in its landscape.a member of Tucson’s small but vibrant creative community, I think I bring a different perspective to my work. Whether I’m photographing the exceptional landscapes of the Southwestern desert, directing television commercials, or setting the look for independent films, I always strive to put the story first.
