Crafted by Akiiki from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, this basket is a perfect blend of artistry and cultural heritage. Akiiki participates in basket weaving as part of a community program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu, working alongside other women and using natural-dyed raffia provided by the initiative.
This commission was part of the Bulungi Bwansi project by Jim Joel during the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Akiiki was commissioned to interpret the cultural elements of artist Brogan Aaron Mwesigwa, who is affiliated with the Busoga Kingdom in Eastern Uganda, focusing on color and shapes. You can learn more about the festival and its events here.
Using locally sourced plant materials like banana leaf stalks and natural dyes, Akiiki’s hands not only perform daily household tasks but also create intricate woven designs, preserving a tradition deeply rooted in the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda. Through her craft, this heritage continues to thrive in contemporary expressions.
